Caring for your Board
Thanks for making us part of your kitchen.
Your new Y|S cutting board is handcrafted from hardwoods native to New England. Each one is unique, natural, and built to last. Like anything made from real wood, it’ll show signs of use over time. A few knife marks? A little patina? That’s part of your story.
With a bit of care, your board will stay beautiful and functional for years to come. Below are a few simple tips to help keep it in top shape.
-
To get started, gently wash your board before using it for the first time.
-
To wash, the best method is to hand wash your board in lukewarm water with a light-duty soap.
Avoid heavy soaps, detergents and scrubbing with an abrasive sponge or pad.
Immediately rise and pat dry. Do not soak your board or leave it in water.
Never, ever, ever wash it in the dishwasher.
-
To sanitize, start with warm water and mild dish soap to wash away residue. Rinse well, then wipe down with full-strength white vinegar. With about 5% acetic acid, vinegar is a natural, food-safe way to help reduce everyday bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella.
Need a deeper clean?
Sprinkle coarse salt or baking soda over the surface and scrub with half a lemon. Let it sit a few minutes, then rinse and let it air dry completely. -
To remove stains, start by gently washing and drying the board. With a clean, lint-free cloth apply cutting board oil, wood butter, or a combination of lemon & coarse salt in a circular motion until the stain has been removed.
To remove scars, start with a clean and dry board. Lightly sand your board with 220-grit sandpaper. After sanding, remove all dust with a clean cloth. Repeat this process with 320-grit sandpaper. Then apply a light coat of our wood butter with a clean, lint-free cloth. Allow to sit for 24 hours, remove excess oil, and buff with a clean cloth.
-
To lengthen your board’s life, give it some extra love once a month.
Use a light coat of cutting board oil or our wood butter, which is made from organic beeswax and food-safe mineral oils. Apply with a dry cloth and let it sit overnight.
This helps prevent your board from drying and cracking, will help keep its original shine, and will keep its grain exposed.

-
When your board is when not in use, store on its side. Do not store it flat on the counter unless you completely dry it first. This helps air circulate evenly, preventing moisture from getting trapped and reducing the risk of warping, bowing or mildew. Keep it away from heat and out of direct sunlight, and avoid stacking damp boards.
-
Most importantly, enjoy the food you prepare, the time you share and the memories you make.
With love,
Yankee South
